Creative endeavors - painting, writing, music, and such - tend to be solo experiences. The Dripping Springs Art League created socials, Clubs, exhibits, markets, classes, and more to serve the hundreds of local artists and their interests to meet, create, and market their art within their hometown.

Celebrating Art in Dripping

In November of 2024 the fledgling Dripping Springs Art League hosted a gala to celebrate our first year and the amazing art and artists who call Dripping Springs home. It was a great time with 130 members, friends, and sponsors joining the lively evening.

However, after the event we felt we needed to raise the bar, expand the scope, and make a statement. Thus, ‘Night to Inspire: Color Our World!’ was born.

On April 16th, we stepped it up:

We relocated from a local winery to Dripping Springs Ranch Park’ Main Event Room

We welcomed over 260 artists and community members to join the evening

We featured 9 live artists and 3 demo artists sharing their talents and inspiration throughout the evening

We partnered with the artists of the Appamada School, Ledgestone Senior Living, and Marbridge Foundation to ensure a cross-section of local talent was on display

We showcased nearly 500 pieces of art from 100 local artists

Our modest 2024 celebration transformed into the marquee art event of the year for Dripping Springs and the Hill Country!

The Art League certainly achieved our objective to raise awareness of the arts in Dripping, to highlight the tremendous talent across all art mediums, and to raise funds to support our dynamic programming for the year ahead.

Community Mobilization

Yet perhaps what is most gratifying, is the mobilization of so many members to dream, plan, create, and execute such a large event.

About 20 of our members energetically developed our concept of a marquee community art event in the fall of 2025

Over a dozen of our Club leaders gathered art from our members for display

35 volunteered during the evening to provide customer service at check-in, with guest questions and art purchases, and with wrapping and checkout

Guests enjoying the tapas courses and company in the Oakwood Star Plaza. Photo Credit: Clea Erdman

Two dozen artists and family members filled the yeoman’s task of moving all the infrastructure - art racks, tables, weights, lights, and more - to DSRP and back within a 24 hour period

By the time the week concluded over 90 people, more than a third of our members, chipped in!

Compelled to Serve

Why do people mobilize?

I believe people want to be a part of a community effort - something big, something transformative, something that feels good!

And those drivers are not just fulfilled for a Night of art and inspiration, and not just for our other large events like the Art Lounge at Songwriters Festival in October or our West of Weird Art Tour in February, but for the dozens of other events - large and small - throughout the year.

What’s Next?

We welcome the broader Dripping Springs community - artists and art lovers alike - to join us. Explore your creative side. Find your tribe. Share your vision. Find your cause.

So after we all catch our breath a little, we’ll be prepared to raise the bar once again. To help ensure our community which is filled with history, culture, and stories also has a splash of color year round!

Lovers of bluegrass, roots and Americana flowed into the Old Settlers Music Festival last weekend for the annual event, which returned to Camp Ben McCulloch in Driftwood for the first time since 2017. Tents and RVs began popping up across the rolling Hill Country acreage as the event kicked off, and a relaxed and happy vibe settled over the participants.

Courtlyn Bills and Erik Hill of Magoo perform during their set. PHOTO BY LAURIE ANDERSON

I’ve been wanting to attend Old Settlers for a long time, and this year I finally got my chance. While normally I might cover this from the objective reporter’s viewpoint, this will be my last article for the Dripping Springs Century News before I start a new job, and I decided to share the experience with our readers in a more personal way.

My husband’s boss, Mark, gifted us with tickets to the festival this year, with all the bells and whistles - including, literally, a bell tent and glamping experience. We rolled in on Friday afternoon and immediately made ourselves at home. I don’t usually have the luxury of tent camping with a real bed, and I can tell you that was a definite upgrade.

We set out to explore the grounds and get oriented. We visited a few booths and grabbed our souvenir shirts, and then made our way over to the pavilion stage. Lots of people were already set up with their camp chairs, spilling out under the beautiful oak trees. The weather was warm but comfortable, and we settled in for some good tunes from bands like Feeding Leroy, Foggy Memory Boys and Two Runner.

Our favorite of the afternoon was Magoo, a quartet out of Denver that describes its music as bluegrass with a “fresh, contemporary approach.” Disclaimer here: while I love live music, I’m not a music critic by any stretch. But I can tell you that these guys can PLAY. They’re touring right now in support of their debut album, “What A Life,” and they brought the audience a fun, joyful and moving experience. If you ever get a chance to see them, do it.

Kevin Russell of Shiny Ribs works the crowd. PHOTO BY LAURIE ANDERSON

That evening, we listened to Lindsay Lou on the main stage, and wrapped up the night with a rocking performance from The Brothers Comatose. Their high energy set had the crowd jumping, and they concluded by pulling a bunch of audience members on stage for the IPA song, which was a fun frolic.

Our campground neighbors, Pepper Fisher and Suebee Hagener, declared The Brothers Comatose a new favorite.

“Frankly, I thought that they knocked it out of the park,” Suebee said.

Pepper and Suebee came to Old Settlers from Port Angeles, Washington, which likely means they traveled farther than almost anyone else in the lower 48. However, reportedly there were a couple of participants from Alaska, and even some international visitors - two fellas from New Zealand probably hold the record for traveling the farthest.

Pepper has attended Old Settlers several times now. His first visit was in 2017 at Camp Ben.

“I brought all my own camping gear and I stayed down by the Onion Creek and camped in a little tent,” Pepper said. “But the whole time I was here I was thinking how much Suebee would love it here, and I was gonna bring her one of these days.”

Last year, he finally did bring Suebee, and he was right, she did love it. They were both excited when they heard Old Settlers was returning to Camp Ben this year, so they decided it would be a great way to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary this week.

Pepper said that whatever happens with the venue in the future, there’s one thing about Old Settlers that he’s sure will stay the same.

“What is most important about this place is never going away, and that's folks,” Pepper said. “It's the folks and the feeling we all create together here.
It's probably not the only place in the country where this happens. But it's our favorite. It's the one we keep coming back to.”

On Saturday, a cool front blew in, and so everyone had on a few more layers. The morning started off with a performance from 12-year-old Ira Thorne, winner of the 2025 Old Settler’s Youth Talent Contest, who blew listeners away with his talent and stage presence. Next up was Brother Thunder out of Austin, followed by Louisiana Surf Department and Warren Hood Quartet with Emily Gimble, all putting on solid performances. The final performance on the pavilion stage was by Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper.

Louisiana Surf Department members John Core and James T. Carter rock out. PHOTO BY LAURIE ANDERSON

Cleveland is a bona fide fiddle phenom. He was born blind and partially deaf, and started playing the fiddle at just four years old. He’s gone on to win Fiddler of the Year twelve times from the International Bluegrass Music Association, and was inducted into the National Fiddler’s Hall of Fame in 2018. He also won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album in 2019 for Tall Fiddler.

“This unassuming guy walked in there and blew the roof off the place,” my husband Eric said. “I had no idea who he was, but I’ll never forget who he is, for sure.”

Not long after Cleveland wrapped up, the weather took a turn for the worse, with guests advised to take shelter in their cars or vehicles for potential hail and high winds. Luckily, we escaped any serious consequences, but the evening lineup had to be shifted around a bit. The Last Revel moved to the pavilion stage, and we ended up missing their show. Then Railroad Earth performed on the main stage. Fiddler Tim Carbone was mesmerizing.

“Railroad Earth. Oh my goodness. They just cast a spell,” Pepper said. “I really like jam, especially for night concerts - to just get a groove going and stick with it for 15 minutes. It’s not everybody's cup of tea, but I really like that.”

The band was just settling into a good vibe when the rain came. I hate to admit it, but we headed for cover. Getting soaking wet while temps were in the 50s just didn’t sound like the vibe I was there for. We could still hear the band from our tent for a bit, and then the lightning and thunder began, and the gig was up.

The rain and wind continued for most of the night. I was very glad for Sunday to show up with lots of sunshine and temps in the 70s. I spent some time doing some interviews, and missed the first few acts - including the Youth Talent Contest and the Billy Bright Band. We did get to hear bassist, singer and songwriter Shelby Means, and she and her band were a delight.

We made a couple of new friends, Lisa Edwards and Laurie Palmer. They’ve been coming to the festival since 2018. This is their first time to see it at Camp Ben.

“I like this vibe. It’s smaller, the pavilion is awesome, the infrastructure is here,” Lisa said. “This is super cool.”

Laurie agreed.

“It’s good people, and it’s a huge family,” Laurie said. “When you look around and see how many people meet each other and greet each other, and they’ve known each other for many years, it's amazing.”

I also interviewed Sparkle Joe, a tall guy with long white hair wearing a flowing sparkly top. He’s hard to miss. Joe said he’s been coming to Old Settlers since 2009. The year before, he had retired and had also gotten a knee replacement. He finally took the advice of his neighbor and decided to go to the festival.

“My beginning year, I volunteered. Because I was retired, I had plenty of time and I got to work on the crews that did their work before the music and after the music,” Joe said. ”So I got to see how the festival was created from the ground up.”

Back then the main stage was across the highway at Salt Lick, and getting it set up required a lot of hard labor.

“I did a lot of lifting and squatting, stretching, and of course, when the music came, I did a lot of dancing,” Joe said. “And the great thing was, my new knee just performed fine, no problems. I realized, oh, I could do this again and again and again.”

And so he did. Joe started going to more and more festivals. And soon, he started experimenting with ways to express himself more with his dance. He began with ribbons, and over the years, moved along into flowing, sparkly tops - earning him his nickname.

These days he still volunteers, and he still dances. He likes to share the love, so he brings lots of sparkly tops for people of all ages to borrow. And they do. Small kids to big burly men don their sparkly tops and dance to the music.

Every single shiny top - appropriately - was being borrowed for the final act of the festival, a performance from Shiny Ribs, led by the inimitable Kevin Russell. I’ve been a fan of Russell’s since his days with the Gourds in the 90s, and I’m always down to spend a few hours with him. Russell knows how to work the crowd. By the last song, he was leading a conga line weaving through the crowd and around the pavilion. It was the exclamation point for a fantastic weekend.

Once the music stopped, the farewells started. Instead of a mad dash for the exit, people gathered with their friends to make the weekend last just a little longer.

Like many others, we made some new friends along the way, exchanged some phone numbers, and are already waiting for next year’s tickets to go on sale so we can do it again. If you’ve been postponing your weekend at Old Settlers, take it from me and Sparkle Joe - don’t wait any longer.

“I just kind of wonder what my adult life might have been like if I had started going to music festivals when I was young. As it was, I was in my 60s before I really got into the vibe,” Joe said. “Check it out when you're younger, so you can have more years of enjoyment.”

Brother Thunder performs on the pavilion stage.

They say, “Everyone has a story to tell.” Many writers dream of publishing to share their past (memoirs), educate others (nonfiction), help others (self-help), take others on a journey (fiction and sci-fi), or titillate their senses (poetry). Now in the 21st Century, technology has caught up with aspiration.

In the past, over 70% of all published books were through traditional New York publishing houses like Simon & Shuster and Penguin Random House. However, the advent of user-friendly tools, direct access to readers through Amazon and others, and the print-on-demand convenience of self-publishing has removed most barriers.

Today, over 80% of all books are self-published and, more astoundingly, the number published has leaped from 75,000 in 2000 to over 3 Million per year in 2025! So if you are ready to share your story, join the crowd and get started!

Getting Started

Getting started is perhaps the hardest part.

What to Write About?

There are so many genres to write about. How to choose? Jot down the kinds of books you read or movies you watch. What do you feel you know well or have a unique angle on? What are you curious about? Pick a topic or style that comes naturally to you.

What Tools Do You Need?

You really don’t need any tools to start. You can just start with a pencil and paper. However, you will find it much more convenient to migrate to Word or Google Doc on a laptop for ease in writing and editing.

How Much Time is Required?

This is another fallacy. You may hear of authors that crank out several books a year. Don’t be intimidated. If you write just one page or about 250 words a day, you would still finish a typical 60,000 word book in 8 months. Sure, it is hard to find time amongst family, work, and other leisure time, but if you dream of writing a book, you can do it!

Staying Focused

The biggest challenge in writing is not really the quality of the writing or the time it takes. It is you!

Imposter’s Syndrome

Okay, so you have a topic and your laptop is ready. But you just aren’t convinced you can or should be doing this. With so many people writing books and well known authors like Stephen King and Danielle Steel, many of us suffer from Imposter’s Syndrome. Why should we feel we can be part of this prestigious author community?

Writing is not a competition about who can write fastest or sell more books. Writing is more of a personal journey of self-expression. If you pick a topic which you are passionate about, you will be driven to explore and share this with others through your writing. Through practice you will develop your own style and others will sense this and want to read what you have to say.

Pantsers vs. Plotters

Oftentimes, writers can be placed into one of these two categories. Pantsers tend to write “from the seat of their pants.” They might not even know what their characters will do in the chapters ahead or how their story will end. On the other hand, Plotters have an outline, sometimes in great detail, regarding the storyline for each character of their novel or the points and research that will be covered in each chapter of their nonfiction book.

If you tend to be a well-organized planner, you are a Plotter so spend some time preparing your project. This can be soothing and motivating while many Pantsers may just jump in. There is no right or wrong. Follow your intuition and your personal approach to life.

The Pressure is Off

Don’t pressure yourself to write “the next great American novel.” When you start, it is just a draft. You’re getting your thoughts out of your head and onto paper. Drafts are meant to be ugly. Let it flow. You will have plenty of time to polish your book through editing much later.

So, when you are ready, just start writing. Write whenever and wherever you’d like. Don’t pressure yourself to sit and write for an hour or 500 words or one chapter. There will be days you will “feel it” and may write for hours and other days it just isn’t flowing. Feel free to step away. Go about your day. Come back the next day. The best writing happens when we are enjoying it and don’t have any pressure.

Seek Support

Writing, like many creative arts, can be a lonely endeavor, but I encourage you to find support. Whether it’s a writing coach, a podcast or YouTube episode, a writing buddy, or a Writing Club, learning from others, sharing frustrations, and celebrating successes can be the icing on the cake

The Dripping Springs Art League, in partnership with the Dripping Springs Community Library, offers a monthly Writing Club for aspiring, new, and experienced writers. Find your tribe. Share your stories. Learn about the writing, publishing, and marketing paths ahead. It is easy and tons of messy fun! The materials and “batter” recipe below are for one 12 by 12 inch canvas. Increase proportions pro rata for larger projects.

Materials:

• Cradle board, stretched canvas, or canvas board. Seal surface with two gesso coats.

• Fabric. It is best to use 100% natural fibers like cotton or silk. The batter “sticks” to natural fibers better due to their inherent texture. Also natural fibers swell when wet and tighten as they dry, stabilizing the drywall.

• The size and shape of fabric needed varies greatly based on the design. General rule: cut fabric twice as wide and high as the canvas. Fabric weight and weave can vary the body and texture of the art. I used a 24 x 24 inch piece of medium weight cotton bedsheet for my 12 x 12 canvas.

• Drywall Powder – ProForm Quick Set Lite - 20 minute drywall powder. You can use slower drying versions, but you risk fabric sagging before it sets.

• Elmer’s All Purpose Glue – I recommend this specific brand for consistent adhesion. “School”, “washable” or “glitter” glue bonds are too weak. Wood glue works, but is not archival.

• Water – Tap water is fine.

• Equipment: 2 gallon or bigger mixing bucket, three 8 ounce plastic cups, and something to stir the batter. For stirring, I used a hand drill and a paint/mud mixing drill bit. It also helps to use a discarded silicon spatula or sturdy spoon to scrape the bucket corners and sides.

Optional materials that make life easier:

• Plastic table cloth to protect your work surface

• Nitrile gloves

• Thick paper like builder’s floor paper cut a little larger than the project and placed beneath it to move the art easier before it is dry; and a timer to track your work “window” before setting begins.

The Batter Recipe (for 24 in by 24 in fabric)

• 2 ounces of glue mixed with 2 ounces of water

• 2 - 8 ounce of cups of water (you may not need it all)

• 2 – 8 ounce cups of drywall powder

Step 1: Put your canvas on the thick paper. Place the fabric on your canvas and plan your fabric shape.

Step 2: Thoroughly wet the fabric in water and squeeze it out well. Set it aside.

Step 3: Hand mix equal parts of glue with water in a cup. This prevents glue clumps in the drywall batter.

Step 4: Pour one 8 ounce glass of water and glue pre-mix into the bucket. Stir. Refill cup with 8 ounces and set aside.

Step 5: Pour drywall powder into the bucket and stir with drill for about a minute. Add ½ of the remaining water and stir for another minute. Take a sturdy spoon to bring any dry powder on bucket bottom to the surface. Stir another two minutes to get the lumps out. Pause for two minutes then check consistency. Your batter should look like a rich pancake batter, loose but with body. If it needs more water, then add some sparingly and stir for one minute.

Bear in mind that making “batter” is more of an art than a science. The water needed can vary based on humidity, drywall powder type, and how well it is blended. Generally, in 5 minutes the powder is fully hydrated, so it is better to err on less water than too much. After 5 minutes of mixing the batter, set your timer for 20 minutes.

Step 6: Put your fabric in the batter and quickly coat all sides with batter.

Step 7: Put the battered fabric on the canvas and shape it. PVA glue slows the setting process, so you have 20 minutes to shape. By 30 minutes, typically, the batter starts to set.

• Don’t worry if you can see fabric through the batter. If you follow these instructions, the fabric fibers are saturated with binding agents.

• Use fabric edges within your design or fold them to the canvas back. Cut off excess fabric either before or after drying.

Step 8: Watch it cook. Shiny surfaces will look dull starting in the driest areas. By an hour after mixing the batter, the entire surface will have a matte finish and is firm to a light touch. At this point, you can lift the thick paper and move the canvas.

Step 9: Painting. Wait at least 24 hours (48 hours preferred) so that the densest areas are bone dry. I like using acrylic spray paint as a primer layer. Consider using several thin layers of spray acrylic paint for the nooks and crannies within fabric folds.

You are done!

What an adventure. There are so many possibilities by building on this technique. Experiment and enjoy!

Sabrena Wright is a member of Dripping Springs Art League

I am a bit shy in new places, but I love to be held and know everything is good because it helps me feel safe. I love to sit on laps and be petted. I do well with other dogs, but I keep to myself. I prefer a quieter home. Larger dogs intimidate me a bit. I love to go for walks and ride great in the car. I am now fully vaccinated, neutered, and had a dental so my smile and breath is Minty fresh. I am heartworm positive but starting my treatment to get rid of it once and for all. I’m gonna feel so good when I’m back to my normal, healthy self again! Lizzy’s is paying for the heartworm treatment, no matter if I am in foster or with my forever family. I prefer to play in a more fun way that doesn’t involve wrestling. I love going for walks, and heading out to the park is one of my all-time favorites. I’m crate trained, house trained, and super quiet, just happy to chill with my people. Car rides? I’m a pro, sitting calmly and soaking in the view through the window. Cats? Haven’t met one yet, but I bet we could be buddies. I hope I can find a human best friend forever to hang out with, go on adventures, and just have a good time.

Athena, the great horned owl who has made the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center her home for the past 16 years, has returned to her nest for the spring. She laid her first egg on March 5, and just laid a second egg on March 9.

Through a live camera stream operated in partnership with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, anyone can follow along as Athena and her mate raise their young. The infrared-equipped camera, which is mounted ten feet away, captures everything from early-morning incubating to late-night feedings. A word of caution - these are raptors, so their meals often consist of other animals like rabbits, rodents, lizards and even other birds, which can be disturbing to some viewers.

Great horned owls frequently lay two eggs, though there can be as many as four. The eggs are usually laid days apart, and it takes an average of 33 days for the eggs to hatch. That could mean the first owlet could make an appearance on Easter weekend.

Athena’s chosen spot sits high above the entrance to the Center’s Courtyard, nestled inside a built-in planter alongside a sotol plant that provides natural shade and shelter. When eggs hatch and owlets grow brave enough to peer over the rim, visitors get an up-close look at fluffy youngsters stretching and testing their wings.

”It feels like the entire garden wakes up when Athena returns early spring,” said Dr. Sean Griffin, the Center’s science and conservation director. “The combination of blooming wildflowers and growing owlets creates this incredible sense of renewal.”

Athena has become something of an Austin institution. She was named the city’s Official Owl Ambassador in 2025 by Mayor Kirk Watson, and has raised successive broods of owlets in the same nest almost every year.

”Athena has become part of the spring experience at the Wildflower Center,” said Lee Clippard, the Center’s executive director. “What began as a remarkable wildlife moment has grown into a shared tradition.”

For the Cornell Lab, the partnership reflects a broader mission to connect people with the natural world.

”Birds spark a deep wonder, and they help us understand the living world,” said Benjamin Walters, the lab’s bird cams project leader. “Live streaming opens a window into wildlife behavior that few people would ever get to witness firsthand.”

The live cam is available on the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center’s website.

For those who would like to go visit Athena in person, the Dripping Springs Community Library has day passes that can be checked out. Each one is good for up to four people. Tickets can also be purchased on the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center’s website at www.wildflower.org.

I used to have pretty fluffy hair but it got so matted that I had to get a buzz cut. Now I’m rocking the sleek, short-hair look. I look fantastic but I’m sure I’ll look even better once my flowy coat comes back in. My one eye got hurt a while ago, so the vet took it out, and guess what? It doesn’t hurt at all anymore! I’m totally fine and zooming around like a champ with my one good eye. I can still play with all the toys and spot all the squirrels. I love playing with other dogs and get along with everyone really well! I’m neutered and all my shots are up to date. If you want a pal to play with, keep you company on hikes and just play around the house with, please talk to my people and they’ll arrange for us to meet. I love playing with other dogs and making new furry friends. New people might make me duck behind the couch at first, but a treat or two and I’m leaning in for pets. I’m very social with other dogs and I would love, love, love to have a brother or a sister. I’m really good on the leash and happy to go for strolls, jogs, or hikes. In the car, I buckle up in the back (click it or ticket is one of my favorite tricks) and watch the world zoom by. I’m house trained, crate trained, and would love to become an absolute expert at new tricks! Can’t wait to meet you and find my own foster or forever family to love with all my heart.

So many of us are seeking our tribe - people we have things in common with around town.

I believe that is why the Art League’s Clubs have become so popular. It’s a great way to meet fellow artists, socialize, learn new techniques, and collaborate on projects and markets if you’d like.

Furthermore, our Clubs are free to members and nonmembers are welcome to attend their first meeting for free as well. DSAL funds our Clubs, so many provide equipment and supplies for those expanding their artistic journey.

I’m thrilled to announce five new Clubs have formed, fully embracing the broad definition of art here in Dripping. Come check any (or all) of them out!

Drawing Club

Nearly every art form begins with drawing. As adults, drawing reconnects us to childhood curiosity and intuitive doodling — but it is also far more than that. Drawing builds foundational skills in composition, perspective, value, depth, and texture.

Our Drawing Club meets monthly to share techniques, experiment with materials, and simply draw together in community. While drawing is often the starting point for other art forms, it also stands beautifully on its own, producing powerful and awe-inspiring finished works.

Drawing by Melinda Springer

Woodworking Club

Many of us took “shop” classes in our youth. Some of our members have continued developing their craftsmanship and now boast full woodworking shops, while others are simply curious — eager to reconnect with their hands, turn a bowl on a lathe, or build a table from scratch.

The Woodworking Club is already off and running with casual socials, shop visits, tours of a local mill, and shared space at our Art Market in the Triangle. It’s a club rooted in creativity, craftsmanship, and community.

Woodwork by William Wigfield

Photography Club

With today’s advanced smartphone cameras, we can all capture impressive images. But photography is far more than technology — it’s about seeing. Photographers freeze fleeting moments, frame emotion, and help us experience the world in new ways.

The Photography Club meets monthly to share camera techniques and editing tips, offer thoughtful critiques, host Hill Country photo outings, and showcase their work throughout the community.

Tree image by Darrell Carder

Sunset image by Jamie Wurtz

Writing Club

Our Writing Club meets monthly at the Dripping Springs Community Library in partnership with the library team. My heart is full of love, and I’m a super happy pup. My black coat and clipped ears might make me look tough, but I’m a total softie. I really like being around people and I love hanging out with smaller dogs too. I’m a quiet guy, hardly ever barking. Zooming around the backyard is my favorite way to burn energy. I’m house trained, crate trained, and I’ve got an awesome recall and sit. I’m just an all-around awesome dog. I’d love a home where I’m the only pup or with one or two small dogs. When you meet me, I’ll make you smile with my sweetness. I’m searching for a wonderful foster or a forever family. I’m a playful pup who loves zooming around the yard with other dogs, chasing and having a blast. Even though I’m big, I’m not into roughhousing. A fabulous foster home or a fantastic forever family would make my tail wag like crazy. Nearly 40 different artists participated in the event, which invited members of the community to visit their stores or private studios.

“The artists appreciated the connection and sharing with art admirers and buyers alike,” DSAL president Steve Friedman said. “The tour continues to grow as word spreads around the region.”

Artist Lari Rogge, from Goat of Many Colors, was participating for the second year in a row. She’s a retired educator and longtime quilter who decided to branch out into wearable art forms.

“I started weaving almost three years ago, taking lessons with Kathy Utts at the Wimberley Valley Sayori,” Rogge said. “Then I decided I wanted to incorporate this into bag making. I like to use pieces for pockets or sides or different things. I love leather, so I kind of put it together.”

Rogge said she loves weaving because it’s so much quicker than quilting, and then you get to make things out of it, which is its own challenge. She said no two pieces are ever alike, even with the same pattern and colors, because each piece reflects how she felt when she was weaving.

“I love color and texture and the opportunity to use lots of different fibers and yarns together to make something,” Rogge said. “I like getting a whole big crayon box, essentially, of colors together and going to town with it.”

Goat of Many Colors isn’t usually open to the public, but her bags are available on her website. Rogge said she is also happy to open up for people upon request.

“I’m out here most every day during the week working in my studio,” Rogge said. “Having been in education, I like to teach, I love to talk to people, and I’m happy to have people come over.”

Winehouse on Old Fitzhugh Road was also a stop on the West of Weird Art Tour this year, and artist Devon Austin was exhibiting her wares there.

Austin started doing photography when she was 17 years old, and kept it up as a hobby during a 47-year career with a school district. She traveled a lot, and many of her shots are from South Africa, Thailand, Germany, Japan, Spain, Portugal and other places.

“Two summers ago, I found a box of five thousand slides that I had taken,” Devon said. “I just looked at one and then went through all of them, and I said, you know what, I need to do this again.”

So she started combining her art with her photos.

“I just started overlaying other pieces of images that I own on top of each other,” Austin said.

She uses a variety of editing techniques, and she also makes her own frames.

“I try to carry the themes out so that people are not just buying art. They’re buying part of me,” Austin said.

Another stop on the tour was The Shops at Mars Beads, which is located in Oakwood Plaza, on RR 12 just south of 290. Owner Carolyn Roach said she started the store in Mars, Pennsylvania almost 20 years ago, and brought it with her when she moved to Texas 14 years ago.

She’s been in Dripping Springs for about seven years now, and has added two shops to the business - Fourth Rock Records and Two Moons Art Gallery - which are both also Mars-related names. They used to be on 290, but relocated last year and now are located a little off the beaten path - which may be fitting.

“We just like the unusual here,” Roach said. “And we try to support local artists and musicians through our shops, which we feel is important for the community.”

Roach, who is an expert beader, enjoys teaching classes at the shop as well.

“I love working with different artists because I feel like you can learn a new skill from somebody else, and I love to share,” Roach said.

At least once a month, the Shops at Mars Bead also have live music performances, and like the store, the offerings are full of variety.

“Last weekend we had Irish folk music, and the time before that, I had a country guy with a stand up bass,” Roach said. “I’ve had a band from the high school - Black Cat Crossing - that was playing Jimi Hendrix. And I have the Dream Miners, who play post punk kind of stuff. So it’s all over the place.”

DSAL has already set the date for next year’s West of Weird Art Tour. It will be held February 27-28, 2027. I really, really love affection. I love to be petted, get scratches behind my ears and hearing I’m a good boy, which we all know I am. I’m more of a “sit right next to you” kind of dog than a full-on lap snuggler. I can cuddle for a bit, but then I like my personal space again. That’s just how this old Pomeranian rolls! What I love the most is lounging on the couch like I own it and just hanging out while you watch a movie, and maybe letting you have some of the popcorn you made me. People call me a gentle giant, and I sure live up to that. I’m house trained, no need for a crate since I’m too big for one anyway. I’m dreaming of a foster family or a forever home to call my own. My legs aren’t the strongest because of arthritis and muscle atrophy, so I don’t need long walks, just a little stroll around the backyard to keep my joints happy. I love soaking up the sun outside when the weather’s nice, but I’m definitely not an outdoor dog. Other dogs are great, though I might give a tiny nip when we first meet, just saying hello in my own way. I’m working hard in physical therapy to build up my leg muscles, and my bloodwork is all clear, so I’m healthy except for my legs. They say swimming might help me move better, and I’m willing to give it a splash. If you love big dogs, I’m your buddy. I’m super easygoing, perfect for chilling by your side, maybe drooling a bit while we watch movies or you tell me all about your day. Just let me snuggle close, and I’ll be the best listener you ever had. They were joined by a number of local authors, who showed up to help support a future generation of creative spirits.

Jessica Sigur, program manager at DSCL, said the event went really well. The kids, who ranged in age from 8 to 13, each had a booth to showcase their newly published stories, and they also got on stage to do readings for the crowd.

“I’m so incredibly proud of those kiddos,” Sigur said. “For two months, they met every other week for a Story Studio, and they worked really hard.”

Sigur said some of the kids just started out with an idea, while others already had a story written that they wanted to work on. During each Story Studio, they would go through an editing and revising process.

“They got feedback from each other, and then they also got feedback from me,” Sigur said. “And then at the end, we had a publishing party. We got together and we actually published the book into a hard cover and got to glue it.”

The Story Maker Fair was the culmination of their project.

“What made it extra special was the local authors that showed up to not only support them, but also to make it a big event that celebrated our community’s talent,” Sigur said.

A lot of the authors participate in DSCL’s author spotlight, attend the writing clubs and also come to other DSCL events. Several also had booths and did readings at the Story Maker Fair.

“We’re slowly making this really sweet writing community, and I’m really hoping that it continues to grow,” Sigur said.

Sigur said that while there is community interest in having more Story Studios and Story Maker Fairs in the future, right now DSCL is still evaluating the idea.

“This was a lot of work on everyone’s part - the family, the library,” Sigur said. “I’ve had multiple people come up and ask me when the next one is. I’m hoping to grow this into something where I can get a lot of volunteers and maybe kick off another session this summer.”

Because writing, editing and revising stories is a long process, Sigur said they would need more volunteers to keep the program going. In the meantime, anyone who is interested can follow DSCL on social media to keep tabs on upcoming events. There is also an event calendar on their website at www.dscl.org.
