Mary Hill Smith

Obituary

Our dear Mary, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, died on the evening of September 6, 2019. She is now with God, whom she has worshipped all her life. Her pain has been vanquished now and she is at peace.

All of us who knew her, remember her love of life and her ability to spark joy in those around her. We already miss her smile, her brilliant blue eyes, and her loving touch. Her spirit lives on, both in Heaven and in the hearts of all of those she loved or touched in any way.

As she leaves this Earthly life, her legacy is rich and has had a profound impact on so many. Mary’s quick mind, tenacity, and depth of commitment to her family and community was the impetus for others to seek her involvement in myriad projects, organizations, and causes.

Born in Dallas, she met her husband Andrew at the University of Texas, Austin. They were married and shortly thereafter moved to Minnesota where she devoted herself to her family and community service. She was appointed to the Metropolitan Council by three different Minnesota Governors. On the Met Council, she chaired the Transportation Committee, overseeing light rail development and the regional bus system, as well as serving as the Met Council representative to the Metropolitan Airports Commission.  Mary was also Junior League of Minneapolis president, Wayzata School Board president, and served on the boards of the Guthrie Theater, Sheltering Arms, Minnetonka Art Center, among many others.

After she and her husband retired to their ranch near Dripping Springs, Texas, Mary served on the Dripping Springs Community Foundation, the Holy Spirit Episcopal Church School Board and the Dripping Springs Women’s Club.

Mary is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Andrew Smith, her children Emily, Andrew (Jill Plumb-Smith) and Bradley (Rachel), eight grandchildren (Ansel, Isabel, Finnegan, Aidan, Brodan, Leyton, Callan, and Emmeline) and sister Jane McConnell.
Memorial services will be held on Sept. 27 at 11am at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Dripping Springs, TX.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Dripping Springs Community Foundation http://www.dscommunityfoundation.org, or Holy Spirit Episcopal Church and School301 Hays Country Acres RoadDripping Springs, TX 78620
