When development creeps into areas of vegetation, the point at which they meet or intermix is known as wildland-urban interface (WUI). It’s a term residents will want to familiarize themselves with, as communities that are in the WUI zone are prone to wildfires.
This week, you’ll see two new columns. The first is called “All it Takes is One Spark,” because as we all know, that is truly what it takes for a wildfire to occur in Dripping Springs, or anywhere for that matter. This will be a limited series to share information about wildfire awareness and prevention. DSCN is proud to partner with our local fire department (North Hays County Fire Rescue), the City’s Emergency Management Commission and the Texas A&M Forest Service to produce this series. Expect a total of three articles that will run every other week starting with this issue.
Dealing with disasters is a hard job. It requires the ability to make quick decisions while under severe pressure in the middle of an emergency. Roman Baligad, Dripping Springs Emergency Management Coordinator, is one of those individuals who can handle the pressure.
Eleven Dripping Springs High School seniors have been recognized as Commended Scholars in the 66th annual National Merit program. To be chosen as a Commended Scholar, students must have placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students nationally who took the PSAT/NMSQT. Approximately 34,000 Commended Scholars are being recognized nationwide.
