Texas Press Association presents awards to Century News

“As editor of the Dripping Springs Century news, my three objectives are to shine the spotlight on various facets of our community that would not receive coverage otherwise, inform in an entertaining manner, and enhance a sense of community as we experience unprecedented growth. I think we’re doing that.”

The Texas Press Association presented two awards to the Century News at the TPA Convention & Trade Show on Jan. 18 in Galveston, Texas.

The Century News received a “General Excellence Award” for the 2018-2019 Texas Better Newspaper Contest, and the Dripping Springs Chamber Directory (a Century News publication) likewise received the second-place prize for Texas Weekly Division 2.

“I’m very pleased with the award,” John Pacheco said. “As editor of the Dripping Springs Century news, my three objectives are to shine the spotlight on various facets of our community that would not receive coverage otherwise, inform in an entertaining manner, and enhance a sense of community as we experience unprecedented growth. I think we’re doing that.”

“Too often news deals with the bad or the superficial. Over the past three years the Century-News has shone the spotlight on community volunteers, non-profits, churches; and formed important community alliances with area non-profits like the Burke Center for Youth, the Dripping Springs Community Library, Heart of Texas Pregnancy Resource Center, Knights of Columbus, and area veteran groups,” Pacheco said. “Just as important is what the Century-News is not. We are not ‘gotcha’ journalism. We don't manufacture headline crisis to raise up the dust. We don't create innuendo. I think that has created trust and credibility in the community.”

Susan Kimball, President of the Dripping Springs Chamber of Commerce, said about the award winning directory, “This issue [2019] of our annual directory was an important one. The craftsmanship of the Carved Stone artist’s work, together with the unveiling of our new logo, made this an especially exciting cover photo for us. It’s a strong image that symbolizes moving forward with our mission of providing business leadership and advocacy for the continuous improvement of the economic environment. We were proud to have this represent the Chamber’s 35th year in 2019.”

The directory cover photo was the idea of Century News Publisher Lance Winter, who also took the photo.
