Pedernales Electric Cooperative has suspended service disconnections, and some charges and fees, as part of its response to COVID-19.

PEC has suspended service disconnections and waived charges for all members in all rate classes, including late fees, collection fees, same day service fees, and deposits—as part of its Emergency Operations Plan, which was activated on March 16. On April 17, the board took further action by extending these measures from April 17, 2020, until 60 days after Governor Greg Abbott’s Executive Order GA 14 is lifted.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had, and will continue to have, an enormous impact on our communities and businesses of all sizes,” Paul Graf, PEC Board President and District 6 Director, said. “We feel it’s important to offer member support during these unprecedented times.”

In its press release, PEC said, “PEC already has some of the lowest rates among electric utilities in Texas, and has scheduled a $6 million permanent rate reduction that takes effect on June 1, 2020.”

PEC also emphasized that it has traditionally offered payment assistance through its Community Support – Member Assistance Programs Policy. Members who require financial assistance are encouraged to contact PEC to set up payment arrangements, which will help ensure uninterrupted service and fees after a return to normal operations. PEC member relations agents are available by phone at 888-554-4732 to answer questions Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“PEC leadership and staff routinely work with members who need assistance, and we’re continuing that today,” Julie Caruthers Parsley, PEC CEO, said. “The board’s decision, as well as the actions we have already taken, are the most impactful way to best serve the entire membership.”

As part of its Emergency Operations Plan, PEC has closed its offices “to member interactions and having eligible staff work remotely.”
