“We’re like a cruise ship that never leaves port, Debra Maddox, Ledgestone’s Community Relations Director, said.

Residents at Ledgestone Independent Living were treated to a Hawaii day celebration last Saturday, complete with a Luau buffet and Hula dancers.

“We’re like a cruise ship that never leaves port, Debra Maddox, Ledgestone’s Community Relations Director, said. “We’re currently on a voyage around the world, celebrating, learning, and feasting on local cuisine of place we visit. This month we are in the USA and docked in Hawaii!”

The day began with a Luau buffet lunch, which included a whole freshly roast pig as the star of the meal. Then the festivities moved to a food cooking demonstration where a chef made spam fried rice and spam & pineapple sliders. Residents and their guests washed it all down with Blue Hawaiian cocktails and fruit punch.

After lunch, Wen Amjada and the Hawaiian Kona Isle Dancers entertained all with an hour long show, which included music and dancing. “Carole and Hana’s Polynesian dances are actually from three different places—Tahiti, Samoa, and Tokelau,”  Amjada said. “Each dance, each movement, holds different meanings. It’s a beautiful art form that takes time to learn.”

After the show, residents and their guests lingered, socializing, in their loudly colored Hawaiian shirts and leis. “We always try to keep the fun going,” Maddox said.
