Lasty year, the kids were busy with the puppet making.

Kids take a trip back: Time Travel Thursdays

POUND FUN

If you’re trying to get your kids out of the mid-summer doldrums, consider Time Travel Thursdays at the Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead and Museum.

Each summer, on Thursdays in July, the farmstead itself harkens back to earlier times for children age 6 through 12, by offering kidcentered 1800’s type projects and events that are sure to occupy children. (And a few adults have been known to learn a thing or two as well.)

Time Travel Thursday begins on July 12 with “Goats Galore.” Not only will children be able to get up close and personal with goats but also learn how to churn goats’ milk into butter, but also how to make goat milk soap. Local dairy Pure Luck Farms will provide the goats and milk and Bare Ash will supply the soap making lessons.

Thursday July 19 features “Beautiful Birds.” This has been one of the most popular programs featuring bird watching on the grounds of the farmstead. Children will learn about native birds including local rare birds, the basics of bird watching, various bird feeders and facts about the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve. Instructors include Travis County biologist Paul Fushille and from Wild Birds Unlimited Amanda Bustillos. Kids will also make their own popcorn balls.

Thursday July 26 features “Wonderful Weaving.” In earlier times, there wasn’t mall or a boutique to buy clothes. Weaving cloth was the way to go. Making a loom out of popsicle sticks, fallen branches or a paper plate template will show how easy it’s done. Working with your hands builds self-confidence and an appreciation of earlier times. A group project and a real working loom will be on hand to show kids the weaving process. Snacks are provided at all Thursdays.

Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead and Museum is a nice reminder of what Dripping used to be like. A big part of Dripping Springs history, it is great resource for all locals, to remember the town’s humble beginnings of when it was settled back in 1854.

So next time you hear “I’m bored, there’s nothing to do.” Remember, at the Pound Farmstead, Thursdays are neither dull nor boring.

Cost is $10 for each Thursday. Registration is required as spaces fill up quickly. For more information or to sign up please see the website at: thepoundhouse.org
