Hays County reports 13 COVID-related fatalities in last week

Hays County Local Health Department (HCLHD) reports one COVID-related fatality; a San Marcos woman in her 80s. It was the 13th COVID-related fatality reported in the last week in Hays County. The department also reports 251 new lab-confirmed cases since Friday’s update along with 12 new hospitalizations and six (6) new hospital discharges, along with 81 additional people now considered recovered.

Total lab-confirmed cases for Hays County is 9,010 with 1,431 current active cases. Of those 2,008 were active in the last 21 days. There are 65,841 negative tests overall. The total number of recoveries is 7,459. Hays County has had 491 total COVIDrelated hospitalizations and 25 people are currently hospitalized.

Please note - the HCLHD will not be reporting COVID case updates during the time Hays County is closed over the upcoming holidays: December 23-27 and January 1-3.

Epidemiologist Ian Harris said Hays County residents should take every precaution to slow the spread of COVID-19.

“While we may not like it, this year’s holiday season will look different for many of us,” he said. “The best way to stop spreading the virus is to limit our exposure to others outside our household. That might mean not traveling, staying home and having small family gatherings instead of large family events.”

He added, “With our overall case numbers and hospitalizations on the rise, it is imperative that we all take the virus seriously and work to slow the spread. By reimagining holiday celebrations and by staying away from large gatherings of people, we can work on reversing the current upward trend.”
