DSHS Tiger Band’s invitational drumline contest celebrates 10th anniversary

If you hear “Thunder in The Hills” next Saturday morning, more than likely, you’re hearing the thunder produced by 24 outstanding percussion units invited from Austin, San Antonio and Houston, as they compete in the 10th Annual “Thunder in The Hills Percussion Invitational,” at Dripping Springs High School’s Tiger Stadium, located at 940 W. Highway 290.

Gates open at 10:30 a.m. for the 11 a.m. competition start time. This year’s program will include a performance by the award-winning Dripping Springs Percussion Unit at 3 p.m. Judges will announce awards at 6:30 p.m. or shortly after the final percussion ensemble performs.

“’Thunder in The Hills’ has grown to be a highly-anticipated, highly-regarded competition among band directors and percussionists in Central and Southeast Texas, not only because of the outstanding percussion units competing every year but also because of the distinguished panel of band masters and percussion specialists who adjudicate the contest,” DSHS Marching Tiger Band Director Derek Woods said. “This year’s competitors are some of the strongest in the region and this event is a great opportunity for us to show off our new stadium as an outstanding competition venue.”

The Invitational is one of the Marching Band’s major fundraisers during the year, and the community is encouraged to come support the Dripping Springs percussionists and enjoy the performances of the outstanding young percussionists, proudly representing their respective schools in Saturday’s exciting contest.

Tickets for the event are available at the gate, priced at $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and children under 5 are admitted free. Tasty food, ice cold drinks, water and snacks will be available throughout the afternoon at the concession stand.
