DSHS honors veterans

Dripping Springs High School honored local veterans during a school assembly on Friday Nov. 9. The guest speaker was U.S. Air Force Colonel Paul Tombarge. He is the current commander of the Air Force ROTC detachment at the University of Texas at Austin, and the former commanding officer of the prestigious Air Force Space Command. Tombarge spoke about the value of duty and sacrifice to country, and went down a list of Texas military heroes to emphasize his key points to the student body.

Also speaking, was Roger Keats, the present commander of the Dripping Springs American Legion Post 290. Keats spoke about the importance of the U.S. Constitution. “In my opinion it’s a sacred document, second only to the Bible,” Keats said.

The program also included several musical performances. Musically, this was the first time the newly formed DSHS “Orchestra Club” had participated in a school function. For the ceremony, they played “The Unknown Soldier” under the direction of Jackie Wogick. The Tiger Band and the DSHS Jazz Catz Choir also performed during the program; and echo taps were played by Johnny Dollard and Kendrick Lemmond.

Finishing up the ceremony, local artist Matt Hall presented the Dripping Springs American Legion Post with a signed lithograph of his painting “Legacy & Vision.”
