County residents urged to download app to stay abreast of safety alerts

An app designed to work like a “ring of security” around homes and communities has earned the endorsement of the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.

Lt. Todd Riffe sent out a press release earlier this week urging residents to download the free Neighbors app from Ring.com, a firm specializing in video security systems, then to encourage their neighbors to do so.

“The Neighbors app already has millions of users and has been instrumental in catching package thieves, stopping burglaries and keeping neighborhoods safe,” the release said. The app enables residents to monitor neighborhood activity, share crime and safety-related videos and text-based posts and receive “real time safety alerts” from neighbors and local law enforcement.

“The Hays County Sheriff’s Office is excited to team up with Ring,” Sheriff Gary Cutler said. “Doing so will help keep our community safer by taking advantage of their advancements in technology.”

Once the app is downloaded, it can be customized for a particular geographic area. Users are not able to participate in ring activities outside their specified area.
