“I was very pleased with the success of the picnic,” Hays County Republican Chairman Russell Hayter said. ” Senator Cornyn said he was looking forward to visiting in Hays County again to speak at our event. Once he agreed to be our guest speaker, I knew we were going to fill the room.

United States Senator (Rep.) John Cornyn spoke at the Hays County Republican Picnic held at the TDS Exotic Game Ranch, on Saturday Aug. 10. The sold-out event was attended by various Hays County elected officials, some of which also took to podium.

Texas State Senator for District 25 (Dripping Springs-Rep.) Donna Campbell introduced Cornyn, by thanking Cornyn for his service to Texas and reminding attendees of the importance of next year’s election. “We need to keep our majority in the U.S. Senate,” Campbell said.

Cornyn began his speech by lauding what he said were the primary accomplishments of President Trump’s administration—"Tax reform, rolling back regulations from the Obama years, reinforcing the military, and the rolling back of regulations against small businesses.”

He also used humor when speaking about former democratic U.S. Senate candidate Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke, and O’Rourke’s poor present showing as a presidential candidate. “He’s bouncing around at about two-percent right now. Pretty soon he’s going to have to decide whether to come back and try again for the senate,” Cornyn said.

On Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, U.S. Representative (Dem.) for New York’s 14thCongressional District, Cornyn said, “I really don’t think she’s ever read history and the destruction socialism brings.”

He concluded his speech by stating that the current democratic party proposals such as the “Green Deal” and “Medicare for All,” were too radical for Texas. “These policies would do serious harm to our economy,” Cornyn concluded. “Think about it. The Green Deal would take away your pick-up truck and your steak. Those are fighting words for a Texan.”

The county picnic usually marks the beginning of the campaign season for Hays County Republicans, and also serves as fundraiser for the county party.

“I was very pleased with the success of the picnic,” Hays County Republican Chairman Russell Hayter said. ” Senator Cornyn said he was looking forward to visiting in Hays County again to speak at our event. Once he agreed to be our guest speaker, I knew we were going to fill the room. I also think it’s important for Hays County voters to remember what’s at stake in the coming year’s election. I don’t think we’ve ever had a clearer choice between our solid Texas values, and the economic harm democratic policies such as the Green Deal  would do to Texas.”
