“It was an honor to receive the Constitution Proclamation from the Dripping Springs City Council last night,” Regent Jody Faulkner said. “As you might know – the DAR was instrumental in having the week of September 17th to 23rd named as Constitution Week in August 2, 1956. The Dripping Springs City Council officially proclaimed the week of Sept. 17 - 23 as “Constitution Week” at its  Sept. 10 meeting at City Hall.

City Council Member Wade King presented the City Proclamation to the Sarah Pound Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. On hand to receive the proclamation on behalf of the DAR chapter were members Bill and Dee Welling, GiGi Sanchez, and Regent Jody Faulkner.

“It was an honor to receive the Constitution Proclamation from the Dripping Springs City Council last night,” Faulkner said. “As you might know – the DAR was instrumental in having the week of September 17th to 23rd named as Constitution Week in August 2, 1956. The Constitution is one of our most revered documents – a sacred contract between the government and the people – and the DAR feels strongly that the Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties, freedoms and their inalienable rights.”

DAR is a lineage-based membership service organization for women who “can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution,” and Dripping Springs area members form the “Sarah Pound Chapter.” “The local chapter provides volunteers and support for the Pound Historical Farmstead, area veteran groups like the VFW, and we also give community scholarships—and you don’t have to be a member of DAR to receive a scholarship,” Kim Dring, Public Relations Officer for the Sarah Pound Chapter, said. “We also worked with the local library and area teachers to promote historical awareness of the U.S. Constitution and this week’s significance.”

The Chapter’s namesake, Sarah, was the wife of Dr. Joseph Pound of the “Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead and Museum.” As the original settlers of Dripping Springs, they raised nine children in their log home.  “She was a strong pioneer woman in every sense of the word,” said Faulkner. During their life-time, their farmstead was opened to the community as the first schoolhouse, medical office, church sanctuary, and hospital.  The Pound Farmstead was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

Historically, September 17th marks the 232nd Anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention.  Public Law 915 guarantees the issuing of a proclamation each year by the President of the United States, designating these dates as “Constitution Week,” and the City of Dripping Springs also honors this tribute yearly.

The Proclamation states, “The City of Dripping Springs City Council calls upon all our citizens to reaffirm the ideals the Framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties.”
