50th Anniversary of Yellow Submarine to be Celebrated at the LBJ Ranch

Johnson City, Texas --Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park continues its popular outdoor “Movies Under the Stars” series on Saturday, June 30, with the screening of “Yellow Submarine.” This animated film features cartoon versions of The Beatles and their psychedelic adventures on the way to Pepperland. “Yellow Submarine” features a host of songs by the Fab Four, including “All You Need is Love,” “Nowhere Man,” and “All Together Now.” The film starts at dusk and will be presented on a large outdoor screen at the LBJ Ranch near Stonewall. Access to the ranch begins at 7:00 pm.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of “Yellow Submarine.” Released in 1968, the imaginative film combines a surreal world of colorful characters and landscapes with music by The Beatles. A character named Captain Fred enlists the help of The Beatles to confront the music-hating Blue Meanies. Together, they float along in a Yellow Submarine and engage in a series of adventures. Audiences and critics alike have hailed the musical fantasy as a triumph of artistic creativity.

The Johnsons enjoyed inviting guests to their ranch to show some of the biggest films of the 1960s and early 1970s. For modern visitors, the Movie Under the Stars series is a great way to enjoy timeless classics while enjoying a night of family fun on the LBJ Ranch—just like friends of the Johnsons experienced.

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and refreshments. The program is offered free of charge. Entry to the LBJ Ranch is located north of US Highway 290, just off of Ranch Road 1. Parking is available near the movie site. In case of inclement weather, call 830-644-2396 for updates on possible postponement.

The LBJ Ranch hangar visitor center will be open from 7:00 pm through the end of the film. Visitors are welcome to explore the interactive exhibits and shop the Western National Parks Association sales outlet. A movie trivia contest will precede the film.

This year’s Movies Under the Stars series will feature two more movies originally released in 1968. Visitors can enjoy the “The Love Bug” on Saturday, July 14, and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” on Saturday, September 22.
