Here are some reading recommendations from the Dripping Springs Community Library for the month of May, chatted up by Century News columnist Alice Adams.

ADULT DEPARTMENT

Buttermilk and Bourbon: New Orleans Recipes with a Modern Flair. By Jason Santos.  On screen and in the kitchen, Jason Santos is known for two things: his smack-you-in-the-mouth-flavored dishes and his larger-than-life personality. Buttermilk & Bourbon, the name of Jason’s wildly popular restaurant and his standout cookbook, showcases incredible recipes inspired by the exciting flavors and culture of New Orleans.

Jason has gathered his best Southern-inspired recipes―the ones that restaurant-goers write about impassioned letters and the ones even his line cooks can’t resist―and laid them bare for you.

Make his signature dishes at home like Literally the Best Fried Chicken Wings in the History of Chicken and Flaming Hot Cheeto Mac & Cheese. Binge on Smoked Gouda Cornbread or go all in on New Orleans BBQ Shrimp with Jalapeño Grits. Finish with a signature cocktail like Voodoo on the Bayou and desserts like Fresh Fried Beignets. This book is a collection of epic recipes and electric commentary like no other.

YOUNG ADULT DEPARTMENT

The last voyage of Poe Blythe. By Allyson Condi.Who do you become when you have nothing left to lose? There is something Poe Blythe, the seventeen-year-old captain of the Outpost’s last mining ship, wants far more than the gold they tear from the Serpentine River. Revenge!

Poe has vowed to annihilate the river raiders who robbed her of everything two years ago. But as she navigates the treacherous waters of the Serpentine and realizes there might be a traitor among her crew, she must also reckon with who she has become, who she wants to be, and the ways love can change and shape you. Even—and especially—when you think all is lost.

Ally Condie, the international bestselling author of the Matched trilogy, returns with an intricately crafted and emotionally gripping story of one young woman’s journey to move beyond the grief and anger that control her and find the inner strength to chart her own course.

CHILDREN’S DEPARTMENT

Who wants to be a princess? What is was really like to be a medieval princess. By Bridget Heos.Did you ever wish to be a princess? Have you ever wanted to wear a pretty pink gown, sing to your forest animal friends, and attend a fancy fairy-tale ball? Then meet Beatrice—she represents what being a princess in the Middle Ages was really like. Pink gown? More like itchy wool! Sing to animals? Think archery and horseback riding instead. Beatrice’s life is no fairy tale, but she will show you -- fact can sometimes be more fascinating than fantasy. This humorous, brightly illustrated book offers an irresistible comparison of fairy tale vs. real life in medieval times.
