Tiger Baseball take pair in Bi-District

Austin LBJ proved to be a little more than first bargained for as the Tigers were able to take a pair in the Bi-District matchup. DS was able to take advantage of a big inning to take the first game 8-1 and then was aided by a big error that gave them the 5-4 win. They will now face Victoria East, an 8-0, 12-0 winner over SA Jefferson.

The first game with Austin LBJ provided a contrast of pitching. LBJ started a pitcher that had an off-speed wrinkle that looked like an old description of “couldn't break a window at twenty paces”. However, it was very effective against the impatient Tiger batters that flailed away with wild swings that made them look bad. One knew that would not last the entire game. When they did connect, the ball usually found a glove. Meanwhile, Grant Gaspard was mowing down the opposition with a complete game four-hitter.

Tiger Baseball at peak

Peaking at the right time is always the goal of most sports teams and that is exactly what it appears to be for the Tigers baseball team. The pitching has been stout with three consecutive shutouts and getting key hits for wins, plus solid defense. The final district game was at Marble Falls. Both pitchers were at their best as the Tigers managed to notch two runs in the third and Reed Beverly made them hold up for the 2-0 win. That put the Tigers in a tie for second with Boerne Champion and forced a playoff to determine seed. The Tigers blasted them 13-1 for second.

Lady Tigers Softball in Bi-District Action

Now it is down to business for the Lady Tigers as they finished off Marble Falls 11-0 in six to end their regular season at 26-6, 13-1. A young MF Lady Mustang team still was no match for DS as wild pitches and errors helped escalate their problems. After two scoreless innings DS solved the problem in the third as they stroked four hits that netted four runs and got them on their way. Two walks added two more in the fourth. Two more hits and a walk pushed in two more in the fifth and then wild pitches and errors allowed three more runs in the sixth. Meanwhile Kiele Miller pitched five innings giving up one hit and struck out 9 and walked one. Paige Leschber closed out the sixth striking out two of the three she faced. They will now face Austin LBJ in Bi-district action.

Final district standings: DS 13-1, Lockhart 10-4, Medina Valley 10-4, Seguin 9-5, Marble Falls 6-8, Kerrville 3-11, Alamo Heights 2-12, Boerne Champion 1-13.

Tiger Baseball in playoffs

The suspense is over for the Tigers as their two wins over Alamo Heights and Medina Valley put them in the playoffs. Kerrville clinched the title with one game to be played.

It matters little how many hits a team gets but matters a lot when you get them. AH outhit the Tigers 10-6 but the Tigers were able to combine seven walks, a couple of errors and four extra base hits to pull away to the 9-0 win that solidified a hold on a playoff berth.

Tiger Golf on steady climb

It has been a steady climb for the golf teams under the tutelage of Coach Jason Wahlers, especially in the girls division. For many years it was a struggle for the Lady Tigers to have enough players to qualify for team honors and then when that began happening, they were having to compete with state-champion programs and could not get out of district. The same problem has been dogging the Tigers team as well. The change in districts did not eliminate that problem, especially in the boys division. However, both teams have a bright future with only Lady Tiger Lindsay Koppel graduating this year.

The district tourney was held recently and the Lady Tigers won the first district title since 1987 (see nearby story) and will be advancing to regional with a good chance of making it to the state tourney later on. Koppel, who holds every individual scoring record at DS, as well as being a member of the team records, led this charge as well.

Lady Tiger Softball quest for state tourney

It is a matter of running out the string before the Lady Tigers begin their quest of reaching the state tourney. They have already clinched the district title and played their last game this past Tuesday. They will be playing the fourth place team in the Austin district which usually means a very short, one-sided game. They took care of Alamo Heights and Medina Valley (4-1) to have a 12-1 record. District standings: DS 12-1, Medina Valley 9-4, Lockhart 9-4, Seguin 9-4, Marble Falls 6-7, Kerrville 3-10, Alamo Heights 2-11, Boerne Champion 1-12.
