Health authorities say one Hays County resident has now died from complication of the flu. The death was reported Tuesday, county spokeswoman Laureen Chernow said.

There were a total of 1,046 positive flu cases in the county in January and 697 in December. Since September, more than 9,000 Hays County residents have visited a health care provider with fl u-like symptoms and almost 2,500 of those cases resulted in a positive fl u test. In comparison, during the 2017 fl u season (September through May) there were only 1,001 positive fl u cases.

Eric Schneider, the county’s epidemiologist, said the death was of an elderly patient in Wimberley.

“Flu affects people of all ages, and people 65 and older have been hit particularly hard this year,” Schneider said.

Authorities stress that it’s not too late to get the shot, which boosts the immune system into faster recovery even if the person vaccinated still gets the flu.

People who do get sick should visit their doctor as quickly as possible, Schneider stressed.
