Members of the Patrick Henry and William Hightower Chapters of the Texas Society Sons of the American Revolution provided the honor guard for the Hays County Republican Lincoln-Reagan Dinner on March 4, at the San Marcos Conference Center/Embassy Suites.

The Patrick Henry Chapter provides honor guard services, in full Continental Army uniforms, to community organizations upon request.  “I think it’s a great way to infuse patriotism into community events, and it’s a great way for us to be involved with the community,” Jim Clements, Chapter President, said.

The Texas Society Sons of the American Revolution, a part of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, is comprised of individuals who are “lineal descendants” of an ancestor (man or woman) who fought in the American Revolution.  “By fought, we mean service to the American Cause. The ancestor may have served either as an officer, soldier, seaman, marine, militiaman, in the armed forces of the Continental Congress, or of any of the several Colonies or states. The Patriot may have been a signer of the Declaration of Independence, a member of a Committee of Safety or Correspondence, a member of any Continental, Provincial, or Colonial Congress or Legislator. A person may join if they are related to a patriot who performed actual service by overt acts of resistance to the authority of Great Britain or who provided supplies to the American cause; who served on political bodies supporting the Revolution, or who signed oaths of support and similar acts,” Clements said.

Clements said that while it could be time consuming to do the research and get the documentation, his organization could provide some help in providing direction and obtaining the required documentation.  More information can be found at the group’s website- http://austinsar.org .

Requests by organizations for an honor guard should be emailed to pres@austinsar.org .
