From the beginning of the season Coach Perez has been getting her basketball team to hustle from the start of the game and never let up. If anything that effort has been racheted up several notches, especially in these last two district games.
Of course going all out and getting out of control can lead to mistakes along the way. In most cases that hustle can far outweigh the results caused by mistakes. While growing up on a ranch, I can remember my Dad telling others after I had messed up and broke something that in his mind a person that did not break something occasionally wasn’t working very hard. Of course, that was not the speech I got to hear from him. Ha! Ha! For sure, it is much more enjoyable to watch a team give it their all, all of the time.
Lake Travis was the first opponent and it was played there. LT is among the teams expected to make the playoffs. The result was a 55-43 loss. The deficit shows it could have been one-sided, but game stats show how the results could have been otherwise. The Lady Tigers stayed with the Lady Cavaliers and only trailed 14-13 after one. The second proved the problem as DS trailed by ten at the half (29-19) and could not make up any ground before dropping the decision.
The hustle showed up in the remarkable total of 37 rebounds but improvement in any of the other categories could have turned the tide. Turnovers 23-13, turnover points 5-17, fouls 24-11, free throws DS 3-10, LT 13-23.
A home game with Del Valle was expected to be more one-sided but scoring droughts kept the 56-42 win much closer the first three stanzas. DS hung on 15-12 after one (10 were Fts). DS cutback on the FT gifts and eased ahead at the half 30-20. DV made a small run in the third to 39-32 and opened with a basket in the fourth but after that the Lady Tigers widened the gap. This was a team effort because as consistent scoring became the problem there would always be someone contribute a small spurt to the total.
