For a good stretch of the season the Lady Tigers basketball team has been playing better than average ball. The level of opponent has been less than average but the execution of play has been above average. They drew the Austin Lady Maroons for their second district matchup and the result was far below previous expectations in the 65-42 loss.
The phase that was most surprising and no doubt was a major contributor to the loss was turnovers. Dripping Springs committed 27 turnovers to Austin’s 11. That reduces shot attempts and allows the other team some easier baskets. In addition, the Lady Tigers had an off night in shooting accuracy hitting only 33%. Much of this can be attributed to the Maroons which could be from the residue that can be attributed to the volleyball team that finished second in state. Most certainly the other stats indicate the Lady Tigers played well enough to be in the game.
Austin High came out scoring putting up 22 to Lady Tigers 14 in the initial quarter. By the half the lead had been expanded to 40-23. Austin continued to outscore DS with a 16-12 third quarter.
The main thing is it is early in the district schedule and making the playoffs is in the hands of the Lady Tigers. Westlake, Lake Travis, Austin and Bowie, along with the Lady Tigers, will be vying for the four playoff slots. Dripping Springs will be taking the UIL mandated break for the holidays before traveling to take part in the Tuloso-Midway tourney before returning to the district schedule to host Bowie at 1:00pm, January 2.
