Friday, Nov. 7 marked 25 years since the last deathless day on Texas roads.
There have been more than 91,000 lives lost in traffic crashes since Nov. 7, 2000. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) held a candlelight ceremony at the south steps of the Texas State Capitol on Nov. 7 to honor those victims.
TxDOT teamed up with victims’ family members to ask everyone to work together to end the streak of daily deaths. It’s part of a new campaign called #EndtheStreak.
”It’s devastating thinking of all the families and communities that have lost loved ones in the last 25 years,” TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said. “It’s time to end this deadly streak, but it’ll take all of us to do it. We can engineer improvements. Law enforcement can patrol roads. And everyone needs to drive like a Texan: kind, courteous and safe, to prevent crashes.”
TxDOT also announced a renewed outreach partnership with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) for the month of November. During traffic stops, DPS troopers will hand out a tip card listing safe driving behaviors that reflect the top causes of crashes.
Top tips include driving safe speeds, avoiding distractions, wearing seatbelts, getting a sober ride, and moving over or slowing down for vehicles on the side of the road, including emergency vehicles and construction crews.
