The Rotary Club of Dripping Springs held a Back-to-School Rotary Rodeo at Dripping Springs Distilling on Sept. 6. The event helps to raise funds for scholarships for local high school students.
“We sent six kiddos $1,000 scholarships last year,” event lead Carissa Holmes said.
Holmes said this year’s event attendance was a bit lower due to the rain.
“It has been pouring quite consistently all day,” Holmes said. “We haven’t even had a break to where people might think, oh, let’s go out for a little bit. So I think that definitely dampened the turn out, but the people who are here are having fun, the kids are having fun.”
The event included stick horse races and bounce houses, and there was also a silent auction and a variety of vendor booths.
Holmes said the local Rotary Club is recognized for its work with veteran groups, and in general is well known to those of the older generations. However, they are working to expand their reach to families and younger generations. The Backto- School Rotary Rodeo is one part of that effort.
Holmes said that prospective members, or even people who just want to learn more about Rotary, are always welcome to join the group at one of their lunches.
“We meet on the first and third Wednesday of every month at Flores restaurant on 290 in Dripping Springs. It’s just lunch, no commitment, and we even treat them to lunch.”
Those meetings are operational meetings, where they discuss upcoming events and activities. Holmes said it’s a good way to see what the club is all about.
“Hopefully they like what they hear and they join, but it’s truly not a sales meeting,” Holmes said.
Holmes said that people who are interested in learning more, or who would like to support the high school scholarship program, can also contact the local club through Facebook or Instagram by searching for the Rotary Club of Dripping Springs.
