Fentanyl dealer arrested for murder following overdose death investigation

On April 29, Alan Steve Rodriguez, a 28-year-old resident of Kyle, Texas, was charged with Murder, first-degree felony, in connection with an overdose death from December.

Rodriguez remains in custody at the Hays County Jail on a total bond of $777,000, including $500,000 for the murder charge, along with a probation violation out of Travis County.

The charge stems from an incident on December 31, 2024, when deputies from the Hays County Sheriff ’s Office (HCSO) responded to a call at Belterra Springs apartments, 761 Trinity Hills Dr., Austin, Hays County, regarding an unresponsive 50-year-old male. The individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A preliminary investigation conducted by the HCSO Criminal Investigations Division determined that the death was related to the use of fentanyl.

The case was subsequently transferred to the HCSO Repeat Offender Program (ROP) Unit, which launched a full investigation. Through the ROP Unit’s efforts, the suspected fentanyl distributor was identified as Rodriguez.

A parallel narcotics investigation into Rodriguez led to the seizure of fentanyl, cocaine, THC, marijuana and multiple firearms. On March 26, 2025, Rodriguez was arrested and booked into the Hays County Jail on the following charges:

• Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance CT I, firstdegree felony

• Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance CT II, first-degree felony

• Possession of a Controlled Substance, second-degree felony

• Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon by a Felon, second-degree felony

• Possession of Marijuana, class-B misdemeanor As a result of continued investigative efforts, on April 29, 2025, the ROP Unit obtained an arrest warrant for Murder, first-degree felony, in connection with the December 2024 overdose death. This case reflects the Hays County Sheriff ’s Office’s continued commitment to holding drug dealers accountable for the devastating consequences of fentanyl distribution in our community.
